Steve Turner is pleased to present Judgment Day, a solo exhibition by Vienna-based Florine Imo that features five new paintings, each of which depicts a goddess that relates to a single element or attribute – Water, Sky, Growth, Light and Fire. The paintings are monumental in scale and will be installed so that viewers are surrounded by the goddesses and their distinct realms of environment and color. Whether demure or fierce, the goddesses are watching.
According to Imo, I have always painted female figures. The narrative, objective and concept has changed over time. I have been inspired by a range of sources, from American teenage films, music videos, mythology and wolf-dogs. Though the imagery has evolved, the themes were fairly constant. Whether women were depicted as wild animals in the forest or as radiant beings emanating from the sky or ocean, power, fear, control, vulnerability, autonomy and judgment were always central themes.
Florine Imo (born 1995, Vienna) earned a combined BA and MA from Vienna Academy of Art (2023). Her works have been included in group exhibitions at JPS Gallery, Tokyo; Shin Haus, New York; MISA, Mallorca; Weserhalle, Berlin and Gallery Zherro, Paris. This is her first exhibition at Steve Turner. Imo lives and works in Vienna.
