Philip Martin Gallery is pleased to present, “Pocket Universe,” an exhibition celebrating Philip Martin Gallery’s new location and the artists with whom it is honored to work: Ericka Beckman, Kwame Brathwaite, Brian Bress, Carl Cheng, Holly Coulis, Katy Cowan, Tomory Dodge, Daniel Dove, Jackie Gendel, Sky Glabush, Pamela Jorden, Kristy Luck, Aaron Morse, James Morse, Laurie Nye, Pat O’Neill, Joanne Petit-Frère, Lisa Sanditz, Muzae Sesay, Curtis Talwst Santiago, Lew Thomas, Sophie Treppendahl, Michael Wesik, Georg Wilson and Sung Jik Yang.
The exhibition title, “Pocket Universe,” is drawn from cosmological inflationary theory. In their respective bodies of work the artists in Philip Martin Gallery's program purse a range of topics. These artists ask important questions with regard to individual identity and expression, how we relate to the world around us, and what we want for our society and ourselves at the beginning of the second decade of the 21st Century.
Representation—a tool to understanding how these questions are figured in both cultural and personal terms—is a key theme in the practices of the artists included in “Pocket Universe.” Philip Martin Gallery presents innovative, experimental and ambitious artworks in all media. The result is a diverse group of pieces produced by artists of different generations and backgrounds, each with their own unique visions in painting, photography, sculpture, video and performance, that push the boundaries of what is possible in art-making, and how art can impact all of us, both maker and viewer alike.
